COLUMBUS – The Ohio House Homeland Security Committee this week passed House Bill 232, announced State Representatives Jamie Callender (R-Concord) and Mike Loychik (R-Bazetta). This legislation will create a Historic and Patriotic Education license plate to support the educational and conservation work conducted by the Ohio Society, Sons of the American Revolution.

Founded 19 days prior to the creation of the National Society, the Ohio Society of the Sons of the American Revolution has 23 local chapters and close to 2,000 members dedicated to supporting education, preserving Revolutionary War history, and encouraging patriotism in future generations. Revenue from this license plate will go towards supporting these efforts.

Currently in Ohio, there are 303 special interest plates supporting organizations ranging from local school districts to the ALS Foundation and Playhouse Square. Special interest plates support their sponsoring organization through a contribution paid when the license plate is renewed. These contributions range from $0 to $35.

“While not a part of the original 13 colonies, many Revolutionary War veterans settled in the Northwest Territory,” said Callender. “Preserving their graves and legacy is critical not only for the history of the Revolution but for the settling of Ohio.”

“House Bill 232 is focused on the education of both current and future students around Ohio. The history of our great state and nation needs to be preserved, and our legislation aims to honor this proud heritage just in time for the United States’ 250th Anniversary of independence,” said Loychik. “Patriotism, civic virtue, and community service are values that must be passed on to the next generation.”

House Bill 232 now awaits a vote on the House floor before heading to the Senate for additional hearings.
