U.S. Congressman Dave Joyce (OH-14) attended a ceremony in Chesterland, Ohio, to mark the renaming of the local United States Postal Service office in honor of Sergeant Wolfgang Kyle Weninger. The event included the installation of a plaque in the facility’s lobby bearing Sergeant Weninger’s name.
Congressman Joyce had introduced bipartisan legislation during the 118th Congress to designate the Chesterland USPS office as the “Sgt. Wolfgang Kyle Weninger Post Office Building.” The bill received support from all members of Ohio’s Congressional Delegation and was signed into law on November 25, 2024.
“I am proud to honor Sergeant Weninger for his service and sacrifice for our country, as well as remember the impression he made on our local community,” said Congressman Joyce. “The leadership, toughness, and humility he displayed on the field at Kenston High School were the very qualities that made him such an extraordinary fit for our Armed Forces. While we can never fully repay the debt we owe to Sergeant Weninger and his family, the renaming of this post office will stand as a lasting tribute to his service and a reminder of the impact he had on both our community and our country.”
Sergeant Weninger's father also spoke at the event. “Our family is incredibly proud and humbled to see Kyle’s name and legacy memorialized today,” said Ernst Weninger. “His dedication to his country, community, and family was unmatched, and I hope his memory continues to inspire the people of Northeast Ohio. I want to thank Congressman Joyce and the Ohio Congressional Delegation for their support and efforts to make this tribute a reality.”
Sergeant Wolfgang Kyle Weninger graduated from Kenston High School in Geauga County where he played hockey locally before joining the Marines in 2015. He earned recognition as a Marine Special Operator within four years and reached sergeant rank before passing away following a training accident at age 28 on June 16, 2020.
David Joyce has served in Congress representing Ohio's 14th District since replacing Steve LaTourette in 2013. He was born in Cleveland in 1957, lives in South Russell, graduated with a BS from University of Dayton in 1979, and earned a JD there in 1982.
